Cinco De Mayo

Today just so happens to be Cinco De Mayo. But what is Cinco De Mayo? My history teacher educated us upon it this morning. When the Titanic set sail, it was carrying 12,000 jars of Mayonnaise to bring to Mexico. Mayonnaise is a delicacy in Mexico. However, unfortunately, the Titanic sank, bring the 12,000 jars of Mayo down with it. The Mexicans were devastated and the named that day Sinco de Mayo.

My Spanish teacher had a better answer:

Cinco De Mayo marks the 1862 battle of Puebla, during which Mexican troops defeated the French army in an underdog victory regarded as a symbol of national unity. Mexico celebrates Independence Day on September 16, but Cinco De Mayo is only observed regionally.
